Then it's probably a switching regulator. Transformers are larger and
more expensive than inductors. Also a single value of inductor can be
used to create a wide range of stepup ratios, while a company would need
to stock many different transformers when selling a range of
transformer-based supplies. Unless you need to electrically isolate the
output from the input, your step-up supply is probably based on a switched
inductor.
