Re: Variac Safety

This brings up one of those trivia that unaccountably lodge in the
consciousness.
In a published study (long ago...) it was found that the distribution of
a measure of intelligence was surprisingly high in a study sample of
electricians. It was a match in fact for the distribution from a sample
of lawyers - with one difference: for the pleaders, there was a
well defined cutoff on the lower tail - but the electrician sample tailed
in the usual way.
Said to be the operation of selection barriers.
So John could be described as suffering the effects of a lawyer-reject,
whimsically.

The easier rule to remember is that the wide slot is neutral, and
electricians always use white for neutral. But don't depend on it. When I

A 115V wall socket should be wired with live on the left, neutral on
the right if ground is on top.
