1) AAPT 2001 WINTER MEETING IN SAN DIEGO

Abstract Search and Personal Meeting Scheduler
AAPT is now offering a beta version of a personal scheduler for the 122nd National Meeting in San Diego. You may view the meeting program by day, select the sessions you would like to attend, and print your customized version of each day's schedule. At this time, we do not have the capability to save your schedule so you must print your itinerary at the time you create it.

Please remember that the unexpected often happens, and that you should check the onsite addendum to make sure you have the correct information.

We hope to add more features to the scheduler as time passes. The URL for the abstract search and meeting scheduler is http://www.aapt.org/meetings/win01/

2) BARBARA LOTZE SCHOLARSHIP FOR PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS

This scholarship is intended for students pursuing a career as a high school physics teacher. The applicant must be enrolled as either a high school senior or in an accredited two, four-year, or university. The scholarship may be awarded to the same individual more than once, but no more than 4 years.

DEADLINE: December 1, 2000. Award will be made at the 2001 AAPT-AAS Joint Winter Meeting in San Diego.

For further information and application, visit the AAPT web page http://www.aapt.org/aaptgeneral/lotze.html or contact the AAPT Programs Department at aapt-prog@aapt.org or by phone at 301-209-3344.

3) AAPT AT NSTA BALTIMORE MEETING

AAPT will be sponsoring a number of sessions at the NSTA Area Convention in Baltimore, Maryland on November 17-18, 2000. More information is available at http://www.nsta.org/conv.

4) AAPT EXECUTIVE BOARD ASKS FOR INPUT

The AAPT Executive Board adopted a vision statement, mission statement and statements of four critical issues at the October Board meeting. The Board is now requesting input on the action items that should be carried out over the next few years to address these critical issues. The statements and drafts of the action items are available online at http://www.aapt.org/planning/future2k.html. Comment boxes for members to provide input are available at this web site, or comments can be e-mailed directly to President Ruth Howes at rhowes@gw.bsu.edu.

5) NEED A JOB? NEED A TEACHER?

The American Association of Physics Teachers will be hosting a Job Center at its 122nd National Meeting in San Diego, January 8-10, 2001. We are accepting job listings and resume submissions. If your department needs to fill a position, we encourage you to list it with us.

There are two ways to post an ad at the Job Center. First, any paid ad posted online in the Science Job Market prior to Dec. 15 will be automatically posted for free at the Job Center. Visit http://psrc-online.org/jobs to list your ad in the Science Job Market.

Second, employers may also post as many job openings as they choose (for free) onsite at the Job Center. To use this method, ads must be entered online at http://www.aapt.org/job_center before Dec. 15.

Employers already attending the meeting who wish to conduct onsite interviews will be able to do so for free, however you should let us know of your intent to do this. If not attending the meeting, employers can bring staff onsite for a fee of $50. Contact jgreenfi@aapt.org for details or to register to conduct interviews.

Members may submit copies of their resumes for viewing. Please download the resume cover sheet at http://www.psrc-online.org/jobs/covrshet.pdf and return it to AAPT Job Center, 1 Physics Ellipse, College Park, MD 20740.

6) TPT SUBMISSIONS WELCOME

As a reminder, The Physics Teacher has a new Editor, Karl Mamola. Article submissions are always welcome. A “Revised Information for Contributors” has been posted online at http://www.aapt.org/pubs_catalog/tpt/ptcont.html.

You should direct your submissions to Editor, The Physics Teacher, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Appalachian State University, ASU Box 32142, Boone, NC 28608-2142; or send them by email to tpt@appstate.edu.

7) APS PHYSICS CENTRAL WEBSITE

The American Physical Society announces a new outreach web site, Physics Central, created to communicate the excitement and importance of physics to everyone. It presents current research plus background information, both written at the level of high school physics and presented in an easy-to-copy-and-hand-out format. It answers questions on how things work, provides daily updates on physics in the news and features on physicists, and offers an annotated list of links. The URL is
http://www.physicscentral.com/.

-----------------------------------

8) AIP PHYSICS TRENDS

AIP’s Statistical Research Center (SRC) has developed a new series of one-page flyers called, Physics Trends. They are intended to communicate key information directly to students and other interested individuals. The flyers can be posted on general bulletin boards. The SRC plans to produce 9 such flyers each academic year. The first six of these flyers can be found on the SRC web site at: http://www.aip.org/statistics/trends/phystrends.htm You are welcome to download any or all of them.
