laser retinal analysis

I just had some kind of eye test called a Nerve Fiber Analysis done
which measures the thickness of the retina (this is a new glaucoma
test). The machine or manufacturer was called GDx. The doctor and the
technician thought it somehow used a laser beam to scan (the thing
had a loud high pitch which the technician said was mirrors spinning
around) into the dilated eye across the retina and give back a
picture and a depth cross section (thickness of the retina). But
neither doctor nor technician seemed to know exactly how it worked.
Anyone have any idea how beaming a laser into the retina might give
back the thickness?
