historical astronomy question:

By the way, the next transits of Venus are listed in the Cambridge
Encyclopedia as being on June 7, 2004, and June 5, 2012. On the
other hand, my old copy of Baker's Astronomy (1959, 7th ed.) lists
them as coming on June 8, 2004 and June 6, 2012. Any one know which
is correct?

They could well BOTH be correct??

Remember that at any (and EVERY) instant, there are TWO days
'happening' on the earth. The location needs to be specified for an
error to exist.

I only realized fairly 'late in life' that the International DateLine
falls in the MIDDLE of a Time Zone !!!

I remember my grandfather arguing that the DateLine was a mistake. I
LOVED his arguments even when I didn't understand them. He had a few
PhD offspring and inlaws but THAT didn't limit his arguing.

He had an eighth grade education, sold honey to support his family of
six kids, then worked for the Weather Bureau and then had a research
position at MIT after WWII, helping the RADAR folks get a handle on
the weather applications.
