Kenyon College
Director of Laboratories for Physics and Mathematics

This is a full-time professional position in the
Departments of Physics (80%) and Mathematics (20%)
with a salary comparable to that of a beginning
Assistant Professor. The Director will report
directly to the chairs of Mathematics and Physics.

The primary responsibility of the Director of
Laboratories is to support the educational missions
of the Mathematics and Physics Departments by
maintaining, supervising, and improving our
instructional laboratory program. The Director will
work closely with all faculty members and the
department secretary to achieve these goals.

QUALIFICATIONS: We are looking for someone with a
minimum of a Bachelor's degree in mathematics,
physics, or engineering, plus suitable additional
experience. A strong background in laboratory
practice is required, and a Master's degree, or
equivalent advanced training, is strongly preferred.
The Director of Laboratories will be eligible for
continuing education opportunities and will be
expected to remain current in the latest
technological innovations. We currently make heavy
use of C++, Java, Maple, Origin, LaTeX, and SAS in
a networked PC environment, and the Director of
Laboratories will be expected to become an expert
in some of these areas, learning new languages and
applications as needed. A willingness to serve as
the Radiation Safety Officer, after appropriate
training, will be considered a plus. The needs of
the two departments are detailed in the following
list. While we do not expect any single applicant
to excel in all of these areas, the successful
candidate's qualifications will substantially
address these needs.

DUTIES: The duties of this position fall into three
broad categories and may include, but are not
limited to, the following:

Operation of Instructional laboratories:
Assure the smooth operation of laboratories and of
classroom technology; set up instructional laboratory
experiments and lecture demonstrations; maintain
apparatus, instrumentation, computer hardware and
software; act as a liaison to Kenyon's computer
support staff; supervise student assistants;
evaluate and specify items for purchase, and
control inventory.

Innovation: Develop new experiments and
demonstrations addressing specific educational
goals; evaluate new technologies, e.g., instruments,
software, teaching tools; support faculty in their
teaching and research projects; develop new computer
applications; design and fabricate apparatus.

Teaching: Instruct faculty and students in the use
of specialized instrumentation or software; act as
a resource for students; teach introductory laboratory
sections as qualifications and other duties permit;
support departmental outreach programs.

TO APPLY: Send a Curriculum Vitae, statement of
experience and professional goals, and contact
information for three references to John Idoine,
Department of Physics, Kenyon College, Gambier,
OH 43022. (Idoine@kenyon.edu) Applications
received by October 31, 2000 are guaranteed full
consideration. More information about Kenyon College
and the Departments of Math and Physics may
be found on our Web site www.kenyon.edu.

An equal opportunity employer, Kenyon is committed
to increasing diversity within its community and
welcomes applications from a broad spectrum of individuals.
