On my reader the "if" below was beyond the end of the line, so that the

That makes my point. Also, if the reader is using a proportional font,
the formatting fails. HTML automatically handles both problems.

The HTML code is x<sup>2</sup><sub>i</sub> and requires no alignment.
Moreover, you can get a program to insert the codes so that you don't
have to know them.

take the time to format my ASCII equations so that others less able
to do so can read them. Long derivations including every step should
not be needed in this group.
