If the towers failed, the ring would crash into the earth (an orbiting
ring is not stable). Ouch!! That's one nasty rope burn. ;)

And forget about the 140 mph wind. Consider the dynamic loads due to
the normal oscillations of the earth's orbit and rotation and tidal
forces from moon and sun.

In "3001" Arthur Clark speculates that such a system would be built.
His
had three towers spaced around the earth, all solid, and then the
towers are
connected by a 140,000 mile ring built in geo-synchronous orbit (not
completed by 3001 as I remember).
