Re: Space elevators

Setting aside the engineering details in this case
is reminiscent of setting aside the surgical details
in a coronary bypass.

The crucial details seem to be
1) How long can a piece of string be?
2) How long can a piece of string be, with a 140 mph
wind on it?

The plan is to attach a carbon nanotube cable between a 31-mile tall tower
built in international waters along the equator and an orbiting space
station 22,000 miles in space.

Setting 'minor engineering details' aside, is there any problem with the
physics of attaching a cable between earth and some geosynchronous station
orbiting in space?
