It would seem that this is a natural for "Interactive Physics"
simulations.

Construct an asymmetric, hinged dumbell. Include a ratcheted spring
which, after a set time, spreads the arms apart (or together). Let it
hang in gravity free space and see what happens when the spring is
activated. . . . Variations -- turn on gravity; try various CM
positions; try other hinged contraptions; etc.

This could keep a student (us) busy for ages.
