I don't know dates, but I recall seeing a videotape done by Jearl Walker
(of
"flying circus of physics" fame) around 10 years ago doing this demo. I
always assumed that the lore has existed for decades.

I don't have a reference but I CAN tell you that I personally 'stole'
the idea from David Haas of the NCSU physics folks. (maybe HE could
trace it back further.)
