" Laser Applications in Science Education"

Gareth Williams
Laser LightLab Inc
garethw@laserlightlab.com

The speaker:

Gareth Williams obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Wales in 1961, and
subsequently worked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough before
joining an Apollo Project group at the University of California, Berkeley.
His specialty in those days was high-speed gas dynamics. In 1966, whilst an
assistant professor at San Jose State University, he became interested in
holography, and since that time has pursued this field, and optics in
general, at San Jose State University, British Aerospace, Brighton
University, and the University of Wales, Cardiff. He has been a professor at
San Jose State University since 1972.

In 1990 he received the first of three grants from the National Science
Foundation to support the Laser Applications in Science Education (LASE)
project. The aim of the project is to enlighten secondary school teachers in
ways of using the laser to explore optical principles and applications. The
first workshops were held in the Bay Area (1990-93), but during the
dissemination phase of the project (1994-97) workshops were held across the
country.

In 1998 he founded Laser LightLab Inc to supply an educational laser optics
kit for schools to support further growth of the LASE project.

The talk:

The Laser Applications in Science Education (LASE) project is an optics
education program for secondary schools.

Following a brief history of the LASE project, and the optics education
scene in general, LASE activities that have proven to be manageable at the
secondary school level (and above) will be discussed. The activities range
from laser beam triangulation, through geometrical optics, to physical
optics. Optical principles and applications will be stressed. The audience
will be asked to participate by suggesting modifications or additions to the
activities as they are described. Equipment found in the Laser LightLab
Laser Optics Kit will be used for demonstration purposes.

The Dinner:

Dinner will be held at 6:00 P. M. at the Olive Garden, in Palo Alto on El
Camino Real, one block north of Page Mill Rd. The address is 2515 El Camino
Real, phone is 650-326-5673. Come on out and meet the speaker and your
colleagues in the Optics field.
