I agree that John's explanation was succinct and excellent.
If Ludwik will replicate the experiment with a piece of
retroreflective tape at the cat's position, and a lamp shining
sidewards onto his [Ludwik's] face in a darkened room, I
expect he will see the effect, when he occults the lamp.
