I'm only getting started in this area, so I don't have solid
experience yet.

I did try an inexpensive 'computer camera', from Logitech, and found
it unsatisfactory. The lens is very poor quality, with significant
pincushion distortion. This makes the image of a straight line visibly
curved as it approaches the edge of the frame. The effect was so bad I
didn't even try to get quantitative data. Other models may be better,
but be sure to check before committing to a particular camera.
