I would like to add that in the U.S.A. a red wire is used whenever there is
a third insulated wire in a cable. As well as being used with 240V
appliances, in smaller diameters this is commonly used in wiring so-called
three-way switches where two single pole double throw switches control one
fixture. In this case the red wire is at the same potential as the black
wire, i.e. 120V.
