Re: origin of B for magnetic field

dear list:
does anyone know of the origin of why the symbol B was chosen in physics
to represent the magnetic field and why we always call magnetic fields

explanation, historical or otherwise. thanks!

Perhaps the question should be modified a bit. Why is B chosen for
"magnetic induction" (or the less ambiguous alternative - "magnetic flux
density") and H for magnetic field. None of these are obvious
abbreviations to an english speaker.
