When I do this the retest has a maximum value--I may allow them to raise
the
grade to the average of the two. It is not extra credit but they do have
another
opportunity to demonstrate that they can apply the material.

I do this with regularity. I make rules that say the best available score
is 89%, a grade can be lowered at my discretion. Both of these are to save
me work as students are encouraged to take a retest only if they did quite
poorly, not the B student grubbing for the A, or the B- squeezing to a B+.

It works for me, but it is interesting how many students do about the same
as before.
