Re: Student question/trioboelectric series

That's one of the problems with descriptive English. My Webster's (1949) has in addition
to tribo-electricity, - fluorescence, and - luminescence.

Incidentally the aforementioned Harnwell writes: Wm Gilbert (16 Cent.) investigated
triboelectricity (paraphrased). And BTW it literally translated is "rub amber." Finally,
Harnwell points out that the position on the list is approximate as other factors
(temperature, humidity, etc.) are important

P. p.s. After reading all of the thread -- What's wrong with microsoft and its ilk.

Since I do not find the word "triboelectric" either in Brittanica or
Webster's, I would ask the student what it was that he was referring
to. Could it be that the subject is "triboluminescence"?

But it does appear in Physics textbooks, see e.g.

Intermediate level
Harnwell, Principles of Electricity and Magnetism

Introductory Level
Lea & Burke, Physics: The Nature of Things

and others (but it isn't ubiquitous in US Physics texts)
