"Perfectly well"? Equilibrium thermodynamics cannot describe the
states of a gas *during* a free expansion.

Good grief! Leigh was talking about "slow" processes ie slow compared to
the relaxation time of the system -- A free expansion can hardly be "slow"
in this regard!!!
