Well it's a totally inelastic collision, so:
1. momentum is conserved
2. no MECHANICAL energy is conserved.
mv = (M+m)vf
The energy that was kinetic goes into deformation of the bodies at the
impact site, and heating of the bodies (especially at the impact site).
I think you are confusing conservation of mechanical energy with
conservation of total energy.
