Re: Units required for a BS degree in physics

Our College graduation _requirement_ is a minimum of 110 semester hours,
which actually works out to about 120 "hours in seat" because we actually
have 60 minute classes.

FWIW physics majors here do a minimum of 30 semester hours of physics beyond
the intro course (2 semesters, calculus based physics with lab), plus 15
hours of math for the BS - we don't have a BA in physics. Collegiate
requirements cost about another 60 hours, and if they decide to pick up a
minor in math (or history, or religious studies, or computer science, as
often happens) a physics major will actually graduate with 130+ hours.

Subject: Units required for a BS degree in physics

Dear phys-l readers,

The California State University system is proposing to reduce the
minimum number of required semester units for a bachelor's degree from 124
to 120. Currently, our BS degree requirement is 124 units - and our faculty
generally feels that this is a bare minimum for the BS in physics.

I would appreciate receiving information on the unit requirements
for bachelor's degrees in physics at your institutions. If you offer more
than one bachelor's degree (BA and BS, or BS in applied physics, etc.),
please send information for all degrees that you offer.

Sincerely,

Mark Shapiro
