Might it be the set of single echos returning from individual steps? I've
heard something similar when making clapping noises near walls composed of
corrugated steel. I assume that each corrugation returns a "clap", and as
the original impulse sweeps across the corrugations, I hear a "tone" which
is created by the various lengths of propagation paths.
