Re: To burn it?

A number of years ago I saw a presentation, by a physicist, on
burning oil at sea using large retrofitted barges. Great care and
design had be taken to assure that the burn was hot and clean (so
as to avoid the large black cloud from incomplete burning). The method
preheated the oil-water mixture (pre-warmed by furnace) and involved
blowing air into the vents in a combustion chamber on a large floating
barge. The oil was to be scooped directly into the barge and chamber
using a variety of methods and burned on site.
A working model of the (furnace) was built in Arizona (as I remember)
and had sufficient consumption per hour to make a dent in fairly large
oil spills. I remember the presentation quite well. I have forgotten
the presenter. The idea of a large number of such specialized barges
sitting idle for large periods of time was quite expensive (even if it
did work).
