I take the view that strain gages measure an electrical property
proportional to extension or contraction of the substrate.
Extension may be used as a token for force or stress or weight
or pressure or several other measures of interest.
It is usual to talk of strain gage outputs in terms of
'microstrain' where one 'strain' represents a doubling of length.
