Arnold Arons is older than I am, and males of our age have mostly
all changed their own (drum) brake shoes. I never considered the
effect you suggest, but I admit it may make some contribution to
the effect we're talking about. The amount of contribution is
fairly easy to test. I can do it at our parking lot, which has
gentle slopes. First I'll set the brakes by rolling backwards and
braking. I will then drive forward uphill with the backlash thus
removed and see if there is a perceptible difference.
I still claim that the effect I described is quite perceptible
and understandable as I wrote in my previous note.
