If E is kinetic energy and m is the mass (not the proper mass),
then "E does cause m to increase" And the relation becomes
linear for very large E. If E is the total energy, then you are
correct, we postulate that E, by the definition of m, is only
an equivalence. Instead of E we can say, mc^2, and vice versa.
