Re: WORD Equation editor help needed

Thanks for the warning, Leigh (see below). My main purpose
of using MathType would be to produce GIF files for Internet
documents. They sell MathType for Windows and for Mac
platforms. Is it not reasonable to expect GIF files to be identical?

gif is a platform-independent format. The files will be more or less
identical, with the exception of the resource fork added to the gif
generated by the Mac version (but this will not effect the viewing in
a browser, and can be removed by other means).

I would expect Netscape and IE browsers to display these GIF
pictures using the built-in plugs. But I will check before ordering.

I don't think a plug-in is used. Netscape anyway has it's own gif and
jpeg displaying code. The inclusion and display of gifs and jpegs is
one of the absolute no-brainers of web page design.

Last spring (?)
somebody wrote that HTML tags will be available for the Netscape
version to be released shortly. Will this eliminate the need for the
MathType tool, as a far as web documents are concerned? What is
the current status of the new version? I suppose that the IE will not
stay behind Netscape for too long, unless they decide to do it their
own way.

I personally would not depend on this rumor. And even if it were
true, I would be surprised (indeed shocked) if the browsers did this
flawlessly. Besides, if you included such tags on a web page, what
would everyone with older browsers see? Even the earliest browsers
can display jpeg and gif (well, except lynx:-). Also, I have used
MathType to create some very complex looking equations. I am in
agreement with everyone else here, it is the way to go.
