You must strike a balance, and you must recognize that students who
are inadequately prepared are at high risk of failure even if they
work very hard. I know that offends the sensibilities of some people,
but I maintain that a student with no preparation should not have an
expectation of passing a course for which there are stated
prerequisites he has not fulfilled. We do have a high school makeup
course for the unprepared and, of course, there is always high school
available to them.
