Not only that but I wonder if the schemes can produce more net power than
it would take to manufacture the apparatus -- for example, would a
photo-voltaic cell produce more net power than it would require to melt and
grow the needed crystals.

Back in the distant past at the IBM Research Center when we actually
concerned with this stuff, this was the chief worry.
