The initial concern of this thread was the > symbol used
at the beginning of each quoted line, not the issue of typing
or spelling errors. Absences of > are annoying in messages
with several quotations. Also absences of names of those
who are quoted. Uniformity helps us to be more efficient.

I am also using the alpha VMS system, but not for phys-L.
Here what I do to produce quotations. While reading a
message I type the command EXTRACT XX.TXT (at the
MAIL prompt). This will extract the content of the current
message into the file XX.TXT in my current directory.

Then at the $ prompt I open the XX.TXT file with the text
editor. I type the reply and create the > manually, as needed.
To send the file as a message I use the VMS command

$ MAIL/subject="Re: such and such" XX.TXT

The VMS prompts me for the destination. I type it and
press the return key. That is it. Not as convenient as
with the Netscape mailer but it works.

and exit from .

With all the Windows, Mac and Linux users on this group, I don't think
any of our "religion" debates have ever brought up the matter of VMS
(Very Mysterious System) before. For those who haven't had the
misfortune of using it, think of it as a more cryptic and disfunctional
version of DOS. (Sorry if I've stepped over any religious boundaries.)
