"Untoward"? You mean that evidence of a aether is indeed found?

You left out the previous text. Without it you have the wrong slant on what
I said:

trying to nitpick Michelson-Morley and other experiments that look for
ether for the assumptions used in them. There's nothing really wrong with

I said it is *akin* to *trying* to save the ether in this way. These
attempts with respect to the ether were made, but none has succeeded in
finding fault with the null results of the ether experiments.
