Re: Physics Internships/co-ops

Tim,

Are you looking for summer programs? I can suggest few places:

(1) Fermi National Accelerator Lab has a summer internship program for
honor's level physics students. It selects 20 or so top students
for classes and work with experimenters over the summer. These
would be junior or senior level students, thinking about grad school.
For details you could get with Roger Dixon at roger@fnal.gov.

This is a pretty standard program for the National Labs. For a
program nearer to you, you might want to call SLAC at Stanford
to see if they have a similar program. I also suspect Argonne
in Chicago has a program. (True, Jack?)

(2) Fermilab also hires lots of general students over the summer for
everything from programming computers to pulling in data cables.
For this, you might want to contact the Fermilab employment
office directly at (630)840-3770. Students would put a formal
application, giving their abilities and interests and go into
an available pool. The students here could be anything from
sharp freshman to interested seniors. To help get your student
selected, you might want to contact someone on an active Fermilab
experiment (John Trammel, are you reading this?).

(3) Lucent Technologies (the new name for Bell Labs) has summer
internships in both the basic research and corporate R&D sections. For
information, they could call Miriam Tyrcha at 630-979-3038. At the
bottom of this message, I have attached an Email that was sent around the
other day.

Hope this helps.
