I find that idea hard to believe. Could someone please either refute it or
explain it for me?

I CAN't refute the 'truth' and I'm not sure I'm qualified to
'explain' wiring since I'm not liscenced. BUT

and electrician who IS liscenced will TELL you that if the first outlet on
a branch circuit has GFI protection, then the ENTIRE branch will be
protected.

Does being TOLD by a certified authority = explaination? prolly NOT.

But remember (or realize) that all the outlets on a branch circuit are
wired in a 'series' of outlets. All the juice that flows to ANY outlet must
also flow thru the first (GFI) outlet. If the HOT current is greater than
the NEUTRAL current (at the GFI) the ENTIRE circuit is disconnected (even
if the fault occurs at a 'downstream' outlet).

(if Leigh agreed with me, would THAT count as an authority figure?)
