Re: "Peanuts" Cartoon of 12-7-98

I, personally do think that it is "worth the grief." As a teacher, I am
confronted with "bad physics" regularily in the media and videos. My
students see so much of this that they have a hard time discerning bad
physics from good physics. Often, they are not able to tell the
difference.

In the cartoon, the comment is made that "objects in the water dish are
closer than they appear." Physics tells us that in this case the image
is closer than the object, so that the objects are really farther away
than they appear.

A big deal? No! However, people seem to believe something they see in
print much more readily thany they will a college professor.

Well, maybe I _did_ miss something -- I still _am_ missing something -
the
point of all this Perhaps you could explain. I see no car or mirrors.
Clearly I have missed the point of all this -- but then it is likely not
worth the grief. Jim
