Re: Sponsor a Kenyan Science Student

Hello,
Concerning the Canadian nonprofit organization, ACCES, through which you
can sponsor a scholarship for a post-secondary Kenyan science (or
technology or medical) student: I was delighted to learn that ACCES has a
brand new web page. It's a good one, too! Below is the URL and other
information.

The ACCES site is at

http://www.powernetdesign.com/acces

Their mailing address is ACCES, 2441 Christopherson Rd., Surrey, BC, Canada.
Their phone and fax number is (604) 538-7267.

A scholarship is $240 in American dollars. (Note: this is equivalent to the
typical YEARLY income in Kenya, apparently!)

Here are some quotes from the ACCES newsletter:
"Although rated among the top 50 countries withthe highest population
globally, Kenya is one of four African countries ... that has made
significant progress in population control. Over the past 20 years, average
family size has dropped from eight children in the 1970s (one of the
highest growth rates in the world) to five in the mid - 1990s (among the
lowest in Africa)."

Poverty and unemployment are Kenya's critical problems.

"It is generally agreed that education remains the most important asset for
socio-economic development of the individual. It raises economic status,
health and living standards. In Kenya, where 49% of the population of
almost 29 million is under the age of 15, it is becoming increasingly
difficult for young people to obtain an education. Enrolment has steadily
declined in primary schools in the past decade so that now fewer than 30%
of children complete primary school! Available evidence indicates that one
of the main reasons for this is that education has become so expensive that
it is beyond the reach of most Kenyans, the majority of whom live below the
poverty line. ("Daily Nation", May 28, 1998)

"ACCES is dedicated to educating needy Kenyan students in their own
country,in preparation for work in their own country." ...

Cheers,
Jane
