teaching experience survey

I am conducting a survey to learn about how much teaching experience people
typically have when they obtain full-time teaching positions in hard
science departments at Principally Undergraduate Institutions. Some of you
may remember a note I sent a few months ago asking about this topic; I
didn't find any previous surveys that really answered the question.

If you e-mailed me your experiences in response to my previous message,
thank you, but if you could fill out this survey it would still be helpful.
I'd like to get enough answers in this format to have some meaningful
statistics.

So if you have obtained a new full-time teaching position in a hard science
at a PUI in the last five years, I would very much appreciate it if you
could fill this out and e-mail it back to <jmclean@chem.ucsd.edu> with a
subject line including the word "survey". If you have taken multiple such
positions in the last five years, answer with regards to the *first* one
you took.

If you know anyone who might be willing to participate, but who might not
see this, please forward this message or otherwise ask them if they would
like to help. To prevent this becoming an e-mail virus (unlikely though
that seems): I will stop collecting answers on Jan 31, 1999.

Thanks very much,

TEACHING EXPERIENCE SURVEY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
PART I: Where was the new position?
-------------------------------------
What's the highest degree awarded by the institution *in the field of your
department*?

What department did you enter (e.g. Physics, Chemistry)?

Roughly how many faculty were in the department?

At what level was the appointment? (e.g. Lecturer, Assist. Prof.)

-----------------------------------------------------
PART II: How much teaching experience did you have?
-----------------------------------------------------
For each level of responsibility in the table below, enter how much
experience at you had at that level by indicating:
1) the academic time unit (e.g. year, semester, quarter)
2) weekly hours you spent in the classroom
3) weekly hours you spent supervising a laboratory
4) number of courses with those characteristics.
For different time commitments under the same level of responsibility, use
multiple lines.
For example, in grad school I was a TA for four semesters with 2 sections
per week. Three of those four courses also had a 3-hour lab each week. So
I would put:
Teaching Assistant (gave semester, 2 hours, 3 hours, 3 classes
supplementary lectures) semester, 2 hours, 0 hours, 1 class

LEVEL OF | TIME CLASSROOM LAB NUMBER
RESPONSIBILITY | UNIT HOURS HOURS OF COURSES
---------------------------------|------------------------------------------
Designed course (topic selection,|
wrote tests, lectured, etc.) |
---------------------------------|------------------------------------------
Gave primary lectures (or |
equivalent), but didn't design |
---------------------------------|------------------------------------------
Teaching Assistant (gave |
supplementary lectures) |
---------------------------------|------------------------------------------
Other (describe) |
