RE: equations on the web

I use MS Word 97 (PC, but it is available for Mac also, as MS Word 98) but I
do not use it to convert to HTML. I tried it but couldn't deal with all the
gifs, especially when making frequent modifications. Instead I bought Adobe
Acrobat, not the free reader, but the software that creates the pdf files
that the reader reads. Academic price was $50 last Spring. The PC version
of Acrobat integrates into MS Word 97. I edit my document and then click on
a button on the tool bar, and out pops the pdf file, a reliably faithful
rendition of the MS Word document, at least when you tell Acrobat to embed
all fonts, to preserve the intended character spacing. The resulting file
is compressed, and therefore relatively small. You can include not only
equations but line drawings (MS Word's draw software is simple but fairly
powerful) and scanned images (MS Word 97 reads and embeds TIFF files
directly from a scanner and supports a few image handling tools such as
cropping and scaling). Very nice. Highly recommended.

If you want to see samples, browse to

maple.LeMoyne.edu/~BridgeDL/

and follow any of the three links to my three current courses. After the
verbiage you will find a table of links to course handouts. You must have
the Adobe Acrobat freeware reader installed to view the pdf files.
Instructions on how to obtain the Acrobat reader for virtually any hardware
and OS are on the web page, if you do not have it already.
