I think this is basically correct. Light is a necessary condition for my
eye to see an object. Light must be shining on the object that I am trying
to see. For if it were not, there would be no scattering of the light into
my eye.

A distant star is 'seen' because of it's own emitted light.

A stained glass window is 'seen' because of the light that is
transmitted thru it.

Maybe it's quibbling to differentiate between light that shines ON
something and light that shines THROUGH something?
