Technician Position Open in the Department of Physics
Job Description:
Set up and take down equipment for physics instructional labs on a
schedule compatible with classes. Repair, modify, and fabricate
mechanical and electronic
equipment for physics instructional labs, classroom demonstrations, and
research labs. Maintain the physics stockroom and an inventory database,
and be
responsible for ordering, receiving, storing, and dispensing of supplies.
Install and repair computer hardware and software in student labs,
faculty and staff offices,
and research labs. Provide support for approximately 50 computer systems
within the physics department, including the specialized computer-based
electronics lab.
Assist in maintaining local area networks. Work closely with other
technicians, including the School of Natural Sciences Computer
Technician. May supervise
student assistants.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of experimental physics.
Ability to maintain, diagnose, repair, and modify equipment commonly used
in instructional
physics labs. Extensive experience with electronics and computers.
Ability to use hand and power tools. Excellent organizational skills,
dependability, and
interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and to supervise
student assistants.
Special/Desirable Conditions:
Equivalent of three years of technical experience in physics,
engineering, or a related field. Previous experience in an academic
setting. B.S. or B.A. in physics,
engineering, or a related field is desirable.
Salary:
The salary range is $2,924 to $3,868 per month.
