Not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet (I've had to miss some mail),
but Kepler published a wonderful little book about snowflakes. He tries
a whole bunch of explanations for their symmetry, but winds up concluding
that it's too deep a mystery for him. Not sure where one can find the
book in translation; I read a really old copy in a rare-book library....
