The second message "from the label N to the label S" was ment to correct
the ambiguity if the first one; a segment has no orientation. One of my
early misconceptions was that N is attracted by the star Polaris. It would
not develop is I was told that the direction is influenced by something
very close to the needle, not by something very far away.
