Re: Science Fair

Science fairs do involve students, which is all to the good. Sometimes
as the projects develop some real science is learned. The memories of the
project can be lasting, and the results can really gain depth as the
student develops. I did two projects in junior high, one on the effect of
air on a magnetic field (a null experiment- in retrospect I should have
looked at the temperature dependence in a sample...) and another on
Pascal's triangle which I would love to duplicate for my students as a
demonstration on statistics and uncertainty. I can even remember a
project done by another student who counted particulates in air and in
tobacco smoke. The antismoking information presented in that class was
striking, and that was over 30 years ago.
