I.Q query

I recall hearing of a study done on a class of students in which the
researchers divided the group in half on a random basis. One half was told
they were gifted and treated acordingly and the other half told they were
requiring special education and treated as "learning delayed". The measured
IQ of the "gifted" students went up and that of the other half went down.
Does anyone know the reference to the actual piece of research, or is this
a myth?
Further, does anyone know of any research looking at links between the
quantity of intellectual challenge in a student's whole world and their
consequent achievement in subjects like physics?
Any thoughts and or info will be much appreciated.
Regards Scott.
