Connecting Math And Science (CMS)
We are pleased to announce that St. John=B9s Jesuit High School
has been awarded a Texas Instruments mini-grant to partially
fund a summer institute, Connecting Math and Science (CMS)
June 15-19, 1998
This one-week institute will focus on using the graphing calculator
and the Calculator Based Laboratory (CBL) system in science topics
=66rom physics and chemistry and mathematics topics from precalculus=
=20
and calculus. High school chemistry, physics, precalculus and calculu=
s=20
teachers are the target audience for this institute.
Focus of the CMS institute is collection and the analysis of data=
=20
=66rom both scientific and mathematical standpoints. Participants wil=
l=20
gain hands-on experience collecting data with the CBL and modeling=
=20
it with the statistical tools of the TI-83. Working in groups,=20
teachers will use this knowledge to develop a lesson focusing on=20
the integration and connection of math and science.=20
Registration fee of $200. includes instruction, all workshop material=
s,=20
loan of calculator and CBL system, refreshments. (Your district may a=
llow=20
Eisenhower funds to cover your fee.) Additional costs: lunch,=20
optional purchase of calculator or CBL equipment at special workshop =
prices.
Graduate credit available at very reasonable cost, 3.5 CEUs.
