As I'm fond of telling my intro E&M students, "displacement
current" was a bad choice of words. No current (charge per unit time)
flows through a capacitor in either a d.c. or a.c. circuit. The
"displacement current" is a time-varying field multiplied by a constant.
It's numerically equal to the current, but it's not the same thing as a
current.
