Re: understand understanding, simple explanations, etc.



The references to quantum mechanics and displacement currents in a
discussion which started with an appeal as to how to explain something to
11 year olds astounds me.

From an earlier message:
If we do not take into account what the students' conceptions of atoms,
fields, waves, etc. any changes made are pretty well doomed not to make
any of the changes we might desire in the students. It is pretty well
documented (to varying degrees depending on the topic) that students'
notions of atoms, fields, and waves are not very similar to ours, hence it
is unlikely that any meaning they might derive from an explanation based
on these terms will resemble anything that we would intend.
