Re: pronunciation of Principia -Reply

Why should we ask Newton, even if possible; do we have evidence that he knew
how to pronounce Latin correctly?

Asked, in order to avoid grading one of those final exams I gave.

Souldn't we really ask how Newton himself, and his contemporaries would
have pronounced it? I suppose that may be as difficult as finding out how
Edmond Halley (of comet fame, a contemporary of Newton) pronounced it. In
view of the fact that in correspondence these folks didn't even spell
their own names consistently, one wonders how consistent was the
pronunciation then.

Then there's the old question of how to pronounce the planet Uranus, for
either option is scatalogical. But at least either one is -logical.
