What is the origin of the unit of force, the dyne?

From the Greek _dynamix_ (power),_dynamikos_ (powerful), French
_dynamique_. It's the root of dynamic, dynamics, dynamite, dynamo,
dynamometer, dynasty, dynatron, and, of course, dyne.

I just happened to have the dictionary within reach.
