Re: Red sprites

Does anyone know an explanation for the phenomenon known as Red sprites?
They are low intensity light associated with lightning that is visible to
dark
adapted eyes above thunderstorms. Their duration is a few milliseconds.

There's something funny with this report. A duration of "a few
milliseconds" can only be the result of an instrumental measurement,
not a visual report. The eye cannot detect differences in duration
of flashes below about 40 ms. That's why movies work. Where did you
read about this phenomenon?

Thundercells do discharge current to the upper atmosphere, of course,
and one phenomenon that is detected instrumentally from the tops of
thundercells is gamma ray bursts!
