Re: Teaching Eval's.

I read with interest and no small measure of sympathy Tom Wayburn's
experience with a petulant student. I am curious if the evaluation in
question was one of his own creations or one of those standard forms the
schools put out. I recommend to anyone out there to create your own
evaluation that asks the things you want to know about your own
teaching. I have done this for 23 years and find the feedback
invaluable albeit sometimes difficult to read. Take the top 1-2 and the
bottom 1-2 and ascribe them to sour grapes or terminal suck-upiness and
study the rest. The evaluation is not a measure of how you prepared or
the desire you put into your work, but is rather a measure of you your
performance was perceived. If the work is not perceived then maybe you
want to look at your manner of presentation or interaction with the
students. Because I (perhaps naively) feel that the students are
generally pretty good evaluators of how you TEACH because teaching is
one of those unique double-acting verbs.
